Test Preparation :

While aspiring for global degree, it is important to note that apart from the necessary educational, qualifications, most countries also require students to have certain pre-requisite test scores.

To gain admission into Universities students must take some tests to be accepted into the university. These tests are optional for other countries but mandatory for some universities.

1. TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language.

This is an English proficiency test required by the students from non-English speaking Countries. It costs $165 and is available throughout the year.

It tests a student on four sections, Reading, Writing, Speaking and listening.

The total score is out of 120 and students need to get a minimum of 80 but most universities will look for a 100.

The registration can be done online. For further details one can log on to www.toefl.org The duration of the test is 4.5 hours. The score is valid for two years.


2. GRE: Graduate record Examination:

GRE is required by all students wanting to pursue their MS program in the US, even students who wish to pursue arts and social sciences also need to take the GRE.

It is a computer based test and is administered throughout the year.

It tests the student on Verbal ability and Quantitative ability, which is English and Math. The sections together are scored out of 340 (170 each). The minimum required score is 300.

Apart from this the GRE has also got a writing section where the student has to write two essays. This is known as the Analytical Writing Assessment.

This section is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. The students are required to get at least 3.5 in this section. The essays have to be typed only.

The test lasts for 3 hours. The cost is $ 190. For further details and registration one can log on to www.gre.org the score is valid for five years.


3. SAT: Scholastic Aptitude Test:

SAT is required by students who wish to pursue their bachelor’s program in the USA. It is a simplified version of the GRE.

The test comprises of three sections mainly, Math, English and writing ability. It lasts for about three hours and is a paper based test. The cost of the test is approximately $113.

It is scored out of 2400 and the student is required to get a minimum of 1600 at least.

The test is administered around nine times in a year and the score is valid for five years.


4. GMAT: Graduate Management Admission Test:

It required for students who want to do their MBA abroad. Almost all countries would ask for a GMAT score for a MBA.

The test again tests the student on English, Math and writing ability. The test is scored out of 800 and the student requires a minimum of 550. The test is computer based and is conducted throughout the year. The score is valid for five years. The test fee is 250$

ETS:
All these tests are conducted by an organization called the ETS or Educational Testing Services.

The scores that the students get on these tests have to be sent to the universities and ETS provides this facility for an extra fee.

At the time of taking the test the student has the option of reporting his scores to 4 or 5 universities free of cost. In addition to this if he wants to send his scores to other universities then he will have to pay an additional amount to ETS for this service.

The fee will be:
GRE: $23
GMAT: $28
TOEFL: $17

On paying this amount the scores will be sent to the universities. Please note that universities will only accept score reports that are sent by ETS. The student should also be informed that a passport is a must for all these tests and no other form of identification is acceptable.


5. IELTS - International English Language Testing System

IELTS is basically a test designed to assess your English language ability.

The test comprises of four sections: reading, writing, speaking and listening. The score is out of 9 and students are expected to score a minimum of 6.5 overall and at least a 6 in all the sections.

The duration of the test is around 3 hours and is conducted by the British Council (https://ielts.britishcouncil.org/Default.aspx ) and Planetedu (IDP) ( https://www.ieltsidpindia.com/home.aspx) in India.

The test is administered on 48 fixed dates in a year. The test fee is Rs.7900/. The score is valid for two years. You can register at any of the authorized centers for the test and MERIT is one among them.


6. PTE – Pearson Test of English

It is a Computer-based test measuring all four language areas: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. The duration of this test is 3 hours with single session. Students can register online at http://www.pearsonpte.com.

The test fee is Rs. 8000/- and the results will be available within 5 business days. You can register at any of the authorized centers for the test and MERIT is one among them. The minimum score required is 62 / 90. Each section has a scoring pattern of 10-90.
